In Defense of My Bernini Post
I recently posted photos of a sculpture by Bernini that depicts the rape of Persephone by Pluto. I think it is an amazing piece of work. The fact that he could make marble look so emotional and fluid blows my mind. This is a depiction of a mythological story…not a true story. I am a survivor and understand that some images can be triggering or upsetting. I am also an educated woman who has learned how to read art. When I look at art I see it for the time that it was created, for the style and the quality, the story behind it, the beauty of it, the not always so beauty of it, the whole picture. I’m not an idiot. I’m an intelligent human being who appreciates art, artists and expression. If you don’t like looking at it, don’t look at it. I will not censor my blog, nor will I censor an artist (especially a dead one) for expressing themselves and their ideas behind a story, inspiration, etc. You can hate me, you can call me ignorant, you can say and think whatever you want…and guess what? I don’t care. I appreciate art and expression. All things have the right to be expressed whether they are beautiful or not so beautiful. Luckily, the majority of people who have liked or reblogged it, are enjoying it for its amazing quality and nearly impossible to believe fluidity. Those of you who are bothered by it, click that little “x” at the top of your browser, you see? Problem solved. By the way, I’m a survivor and a member of the RAINN Speakers Bureau. Don’t expect the rest of the world to follow your lead. Individuals will be individuals. I suggest you try being an individual too and moving along.
*Pluto and Persephone*
I am having a sculpture orgasm. No, a Gian Lorenzo Bernini orgasm. What he has been able to do with marble since he was a small child, is un-friggin’-real. This art…where is it now? Find out more here:
